FUNdamentals
Character Development is a big part of our YMCA programs and values such as caring, honesty, respect and responsibility are an integral part of everything we do.
Everyone Plays. No exceptions, because we know that when everyone plays, everyone wins regardless of ability. Tryouts and cutting aren’t words we use and our volunteer coaches do their best to see that everyone has equal practice and playing time.
Positive Competition. We realize that a level of competition comes naturally but we’re an inclusive organization and we work to keep the outcome of games in perspective. Instead of competition we emphasize having fun, participating, teamwork, learning new skills, and showing respect for others.
Sportsmanship. Coaches, parents, and players are all expected to show respect for everyone involved. Learning to keep a positive attitude is an important part of our program.
Games Approach. Younger children learn fundamentals by participating in a modified, developmentally appropriate version of the game. For older children, we combine both modified and regular games, with traditional drills to give participants a solid understanding of the sport.
Sports for Fun. Above all, we know that kids join sports for fun. We know that if we take the fun out of sports, we risk children taking themselves out of sports. We strive to provide an educational and fun program for all.
